day three of installation 1 may: the painting is done. the lights are up and today the art work was all hung, along with my name sign, business cards, and comment book for art loving patrons to write in.

neal and i were able to finish installing in three days! of course this is largely due to my wonderful neal who worked very hard to do the painting, lights and hanging the art.
and what did i do…….well…..i made the art and the picnic dinners and lavished praise and kisses on my great guy!
actually neal really enjoys doing all this. we have always, through out our marriage, worked well as a team and he likes "helping out"…makes him feel part of the artomatic experience and also part of what i do in my life as an artist. he is my biggest fan and supporter. knowing he is "in my corner" really aids in my creative processes!

in between hanging work we stopped for a picnic dinner.

now that i have finished hanging my work i can "relax", do my volunteer shifts and come to artomatic just to check up on my space and also see what the rest of the aom-ers are doing for install and get a sneak peek at the art work before the show opens.

my space turned out just as i had envisioned it. i am very pleased.

last year i painted my space lime green and it became known as "the lime green beast". this year i am painted my space orange. i wonder what it’s "name" will be?

artomatic art show at new artomatic space…55 m st. SE, washington dc.

this is the space for one of my upcoming art shows…29 may to 5 july. artomatic is an art happening that occurs in the washington, dc area usually every year. this is the 10th year anniversary..so a special show. i have been in artomatic since 2007. there are around 800 artists that participate. not all are 2d artists. some are sculptors, musicians, dance, other performance artists (like fire eaters!), there is food, music, bars, and all sorts of happenings. it is one of the most popular shows in this area. all the art is for sale. i have had many good things happen to me art-wise with artomatic.
an artist can display anything they want. this year i will be showing my pastels.
the building is a new building under construction. the owner will let us have the art show there (FOR FREE…NO RENT) before he rents the building to businesses.
we built walls, partitions for artists to hang their work, rooms, stages, put in lighting, etc. all the artists do the work together.
it is great fun.

these are the partitions artomatic used in the artomatic ’08 show. this year we turned the wood inside out…the surfaces from last year, that each artist painted/decorated to suit her/his artistic creation are now facing inward.

after artist selects their space they will begin to paint and hang their work.

starting april 29 artomatic artists will be installing their work.
the show runs 29 may-5 july.

“old timers” share your artomatic experience….a walk down memory lane for the 10th anniversary of artomatic
for blog.artomatic.

a few days ago I was approached by kira, who, along with eric, is doing the artomatic blog, to ask if I could help out with the blog. well….who could say no to kira! she is so nice (and doing a great job!). we tossed around some ideas of what might be interesting to aom-ers to read on the blog , and what might be helpful to the general public, art loving patrons and press and publicity to read. the more press and publicity that artomatic gets, the better for us all!

I decided that since artomatic is chock a block full of “old timers” (hope you all don’t mind the term “old timer”!) artists…folks who have been part of artomatic for many years…and since this year the artomatic artists are fairly evenly divided between “old timers” and “newbies”….it might be fun to “take a walk down memory lane”…always nice to look back and see where artomatic has been and is now…and always good information for those new to the artomatic happening.

I know lots of this “nostalgia” can be found in the artomatic archives and also all sorts of goodies in the individual artists “experience” threads on artdc. org, but……there is always a fresh perspective to be gained by “doing it again”, though this time with a slight twist.

so with this in mind, coupled with the fact that this is the 10th anniversary of artomatic!!!!!, I am starting this blog.
I know we all are busy right now doing installation, so perhaps you might not have the time currently to join in and add your thoughts. there is no time limit as to when you can do this. whenever you have time to share a few thoughts about your artomatic experience would be great. and remember, you can always go back and add to what you have shared.

what I have in mind is a series of “questions” that might be relevant to this blog. of course I’m sure that I will leave out things that folks might want to write about, so feel free to add. not all “questions” need to be answered and they don’t need to be in “question” form. a narrative is fine of course. write as much or as little as you want. you know I’m a “talky” new york gal, so I’ll probably ramble on. make your experience as personal to you as an artist as you care to.

I know there are many folks, who though not artists themselves, love artomatic and every year volunteer their time to artomatic. we’d love to hear from you also.

artomatic is a wonderful community of artists coming together to joyfully share their art. this is the 10th anniversary of us!

1.when did you first join artomatic? how did you learn about artomatic?

I went to two artomatics (before joining)…artomatic on the waterfront in washington, d.c. and artomatic in the old sears building in washington, d.c. although, for my first aom attended as a “general public” person, I had read about aom in the newspaper I was not prepared for my reaction/experience to aom. I was amazed, awed, bowled over, absolutely in love (!!!!!) with all that I saw. the sheer numbers of artists and their talented expression of their art won my heart!
I eagerly attended my next aom. again…delight and joy. at that point I decided that I, as a fledging artist, wanted to be part of this great happening. I eagerly approached the gals manning the welcome desk and asked how did I go about becoming an artist at aom. well…perhaps they weren’t well trained, or perhaps they were tired, or perhaps they just didn’t care that I wanted to be part of this aom..they told me: “they didn’t know”! can you believe that! I asked if I could leave my name, email and phone number and maybe someone could contact me. they were less than welcoming to that idea. I left my contact information and………I never heard from anyone!!!!!!!!! that did not leave a good taste in my mouth about artomatic. so when the next artomatic rolled around, at the children’s museum, I decided not to go. “who were these artomatic folks anyway” I wondered, that they could be so “exclusive” that they wouldn’t contact me. I was “down” on artomatic! I did learn later that the aom at the children’s museum was a fantastic show…too bad I missed it, but!
then in 2007 I heard from a friend, whose daughter was in artomatic, that they were having the show again. so I googled artomatic, found the site, learned about the “newbie” meeting (at the warehouse in d.c.) and decided to try agin. I am so glad I did!
this experience has made me very “sensitive” to the concerns of ll “newbies” as I was once one myself…and considering the “brush off I got” I almost wasn’t an “artomatic old timer”.

I went to my first artomatic meeting and didn’t know anyone of course. I spotted a guy who was talking to a lot of folks and thought “maybe he can help me”. I introduced myself and said I was interested in joining and could he tell me a little about artomatic. well this “guy” (who turned out to be jim tretick) said “you see that guy at the bar. he “might” know something about artomatic. go ask him”. so, I approached the bar guy and said “that guy over there (pointing at jim…I have since decided that this was jim’s wicked sense of humor!) said you might know something about artomatic and could give me some information about what it is, how to join, etc.”. so…mr. bar guy did just that. I learned much later that mr. bar guy was george koch….and of course he knows all about artomatic!

I attended a few more “newbie” meetings and found out about the event, planning, management committee (emp) and decided to join that. my feeling was, and still is: the more you put in, participate in , join in, the artomatic experience, the more you get out of being an aom-er. aom, for me, isn’t just about showing my art..it is being part of the artomatic family community.

artomatic is 10 years old, but, since I didn’t join until 2007, that makes me “three years old”!

2. what artomatic “behind the scenes” work do you do? how do you feel about it? how has it contributed to your artomatic experience? how has your “behind the scenes “ experience grown?. what about your “volunteer” experiences?

since joining artomatic in 2007 I have been a member of the epm committee, for all three years.
I have also been on the site selection committee, for all three years. during site selection I like to work the desk. I really enjoy the excitement of artists registering to select their space, especially the “newbies”. it is great fun for me to “meet and greet” everyone. and also it affords me the opportunity to say hi to “old friends” that I haven’t seen since the last aom.

in 2007 I did my volunteer shifts during the show and worked at the “welcome desk”. again I liked greeting the art loving public and getting them excited to go see everything!

for aom 2008 and 2009 I worked at the loading dock during installation. again another chance to see aom artists as they came to start setting up their space. this was especially rewarding as I helped the “newbies” get started.

every year I try to add more to my repetoire of “behind the scenes” things that I do. each new venture enhances my artomatic experience both as an artist and as a member of the aom community.

3. what “art-wise” has happened for you as an artist in artomatic?

many outstanding things have happened for me in the “art world” as a direct result of artomatic.
I have sold art work at artomatic.
as a result of both the gallery owner and the curator of the gallery (separately) seeing my art at aom 2007 I was invited to have a show in a U street gallery, washington, d.c..
as a result of another aom-er seeing my work and talking about me to a man who has a show on television, I was invited to be a guest on this television show and show my art.
having my business cards, with my website on them, at artomatic has led to people viewing my work on my website and buying my art.
I have been featured on blogs of fellow artists.

4. what other benefits are there in being an artomatic artist:
the best/biggest “other benefit” for me is all the wonderful friends I have made at artomatic. when I firsts started I knew no one…now there are so many artists I am pleased to call friend. for me artomatic is all about the community of fellow aom artists……
although I had been making art all my life and had been in many art shows I wasn’t sure that I considered myself “artist”. after artomatic ’07 I was able to quite prouldy call myself artist. this was a result, not just of work sold, etc., but mainly due to the feedback and caring I received from my fellow artomatic artists.

5. how has your art evolved from your first artomatic to this current artomatic, both personally from what you create and/or to what you choose to show at artomatic? has artomatic influenced you in any way artistically?

my first artomatic, 2007, was at crystal city. a fabulous building with many wonderful rooms for 2d artists. since the room had such a long wall I decided to showcase my art starting from one dimesion to 2d to 3d. I was able to create a space that said : here is the art of jennifer”…my own personal statement of “art outside the edge”.

on opening day of artomatic 2007 I eagerly walked the art spaces and soaked up all the amazing art that was there.
I was so stimulated, artistically, that the very next day I began to work in my studio and created my “blood series”. the 5 pieces of this series were created in a two week frenzy following the opening night. these new paintings led my art in a new direction “stylistically” and I have been emersed in “blood” ever since. of course I still return to my altars, shrines, mail art, box art, etc., but they are now all in this new “style”. I am enormously pleased. I feel I have found “my voice” stylistically.

in 2008 I showcased my “new” art and was quite pleased at the reception the pieces received.

blood series uses visual language to generate archetypal, primal figures. there is a subconscious decision to call forth these god figures — form representations. they are tied all together in blood — birth, life, family, violence and death. from "the garden of eden" to "the hand of god" — witness horror, joy and recovery.

now what to do for artomatic 2009?
I trekked in west africa summer of 2008. I had an amazing adventure and when I returned I wanted to “do africa” in art. before I left I had been considering working on cardboard and solicited the advice of fellow artists, some of whom recommended pastels as a good medium for cardboard.
thus my “africa series” pastels on cardboard was “born”.
never having worked in pastel prior to this i was enjoying exploring this new medium.

the african series pastel work is a reflection/documentation of our west africa summer ’08 trip. but, it does not reflect my usual "style" of work (especially the portraits i did in pastel).
therefore i decided to "try" my hand at pastel using my usual cast of characters that one normally sees in my art.
i was surprised with how the first pastel piece turned out. although the "people" that are represented in this and the other 17 pieces (to date…I am working on pastel 18 currently) are ones i’ve used before they have never been used in quite this way..by that i mean……so "cheerful"!!! ( as i view the piece). normally my art is rather dark, has lots of grim figures, "blood", etc. but some of these pastel art pieces practically sparkle with pinks, light blue, turquoise, bright oranges, yellows. considering that it started out only as an "experiment" and not intended to be a "serious" new direction for my art, i suppose i have achieved my goal. i now know i can use pastel with my usual people/figures/hands/etc. but….i also know that pastel and "blood" do not always mix. perhaps as i continue "there will be blood" !

I am now quite “addicted” to working in pastels and work in my studio every day. in a way I have artomatic to thank for my “new” art.

I will be showing 12 of my pastels at artomatic 2009. i just sold two of my pastels… "pastel 2: why are they crying?" and "pastel 9".
i also sold "pastel 5: paradise found” a few weeks ago.
i am mega psyched. three pastels sold before the show even opens. luckily i’ve continued to work so i have others i can hang and still have the 12 i wanted to hang…just not the "original" 12!

6. where do you see artomatic going? and what do you see your “role” in artomatic in the future?

I think the 10th anniversary is a perfect time to look back, reflect, enjoy the “memories, enjoy and relish the “anniversary”.

I believe artomatic will continue..perhaps every year…or maybe back to the original format of every other year . artomatic has become quite well known and many building owners are clamoring to have us in their space…be it a new building under construction…or an old building ready for renovation. all this bodes well for the future of artomatic.

as for me….i will continue to be a participating artist, I will continue my work with the committees. each year I hope to add more to my list of things I do to ensure a long life for artomatic.

Q&A TO ANSWER:

1) How do you feel about taking part in the 10th Anniversary of Artomatic?

i think the 10th anniversary is a perfect time for all of us at artomatic to look back, reflect, enjoy the “memories, enjoy and relish the “anniversary”.

2) Describe what you will be showing this year.

to celebrate artomatics 10th anniversary i am showing an entirely new body of work. i usually work in acrylic/collage/box art assemblage/shrines/altars. this year i will be showing my new series in water soluble pastels on cardboard framed on wood.
i began to work in pastels in january 2009. never having worked in pastel prior to this i have been enjoying exploring this new medium.
the pastel work i began was a reflection/documentation of my west africa summer 2008 trip. but, it did not reflect my usual "style" of work.
therefore i decide to "try" my hand at pastel using my usual “cast of characters” that one normally sees in my art.

3) Why should an artomatic visitor make the special trip to visit your space?

if an art loving person is interested in a thought provoking experience with the “traditional” medium of pastels used in a fresh, new and exciting way…then my art space at artomatic, 9th floor, 9-04-P-1, will certainly reward.
pastels are normally thought of as the medium for fruit, flowers, other assorted still life, landscapes…….however i have taken pastels to the next level and beyond.
my pastels, done on cardboard and framed on painted wood, are an expression of all that encompasses the cutting edge of today’s art scene.

i am a self taught artist
my art has redefined the classic painting statement. this is a constant source of delight, opening up depth, range and texture. i express myself using materials as a total gestalt, creating images from the turmoil of my mind.

as a self taught artist i sometimes find myself struggling with “how to”. not having formal art training allows me to create, not just through “trial and error”, but also without any preconceived notions of “how it must be done”. using my own techniques affords me the advantage of creating in innovative ways.

i work in many media: acrylic, watercolor, collage and now…pastel. i use objects and materials not just as a tool but often as the end result itself. i am a devotee of found objects and street trash. found objects, bones, teeth, blood, concrete, glass, other pieces of street trash find homes in my art. there is no object i can resist and bring to my studio, where it waits…a silent muse…for my next art piece.

i begin each piece with no preconception of what will occur. i never know, from beginning to end, what i will give birth to and am often astounded at what my mind has produced.

i could call my art outsider, visionary, raw, collagist, folk, emerging ……but the word that best defines me and what i do is…….artist.
