1840 — Harriet and her sister moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where James Buchanan was an attorney and they became wards of his and he sent them to school in Lancaster, a school that was run by the Crawford sisters, two old spinster ladies who were very strict. Harriet was a very good student but didn’t like rules. In fact, in a letter to her uncle, the two sisters wrote that she was very adept at academics, but was so fun-living that they branded her as a willful domestic outlaw. Her teachers over the years, pretty much echoed those same sentiments. She was an outstanding student but she was always in trouble.

The Lane House is a Federal 2.5 story brick house. Its large frontispiece consists of side and elliptical fan lights with slender columns on either side of the door. Originally, there were nine windows placed symmetrically around the door, but 19th century have replaced those on the first floor. The roof is metal; the cornice and water table, which is near the base of the shop windows, are brick. The building is historically significant because it was frequently visited and, for a while, jointly owned by Jarriet Lane, the niece and hostess of President James Buchanan.

Although Harriet was the ward of President Buchanan, she and her sister, attend school in Charles town.

TO MISS LANE.1
WASHINGTON 16 February 1842. MY DEAR HARRIET
Your letter afforded me very great pleasure. There is no wish nearer my heart than that you should become an amiable & intelligent woman: and I am rejoiced to learn that you still continue at the head of your class. You can render yourself very dear to me by your conduct;

and I anticipate with pleasure the months which I trust in Heaven we may pass together after the adjournment of Congress. I expect to be in Lancaster for a week or ten days about the first of April, when I hope to see you in good health & receive the most favorable reports of your behaviour.

CALLIOPE, the most honoured of the Muses, presided over heroic song and epic poetry, and is represented with a pencil in her hand, and a slate upon her knee.

CLIO, the muse of History, holds in her hand a roll of parchment, and wears a wreath of laurel.

MELPOMENE, the muse of Tragedy, bears a tragic mask.

THALIA, the muse of Comedy, carries in her right hand a shepherd’s crook, and has a comic mask beside her.

POLYHYMNIA, the muse of Sacred Hymns, is crowned with a wreath of laurel. She is always represented in a thoughtful attitude, and entirely enveloped in rich folds of drapery.

TERPSICHORE, the muse of Dance and Roundelay, is represented in the act of playing on a seven-stringed lyre.

URANIA, the muse of Astronomy, stands erect, and bears in her left hand a celestial globe.

EUTERPE, the muse of Harmony, is represented bearing a musical instrument, usually a flute.

ERATO, the muse of Love and hymeneal songs, wears a wreath of laurel, and is striking the chords of a lyre.

(When Harriet was twelve years old he sent her with her sister to a boarding school at Charles town). Nunc wrote them in March 20, 1843
Education & accomplishments are very important; but they sink into insignificance when compared with the proper government of the heart & temper. How all your relatives & friends would love you, . . . What a long list of studies you are engaged upon ! The number would be too great for any common intellect ; but it would seem that you manage them all without difficulty. As mythology & history seem to be your favorites, I shall expect, when we meet that you will have all the Gods & heroes of Greece & Rome, at your fingers’ ends.
